Our story began in 1972 when a man from Hope, Arkansas came to Kansas City in search of the American Dream. Hayward Spears opened Johnson County's first BBQ restaurant on 95th and Antioch in a building not any bigger than a living room. With the help of his family, the business grew and attracted people from all around the country. Shortly after, Hayward's BBQ made the corner of College and Antioch its home for 30 years, while welcoming guests to the likes of Al Green, Walter Cronkite, and Wayne Newton to name a few.
Today, Hayward's is owned by Eric Sweeney whose first job was stoking the fires in the pit for Hayward at the age of 13. Hayward's Pit Bar-B-Que is still 100% family owned and operated and serving the best 100% real hickory smoked meats you can find over 50 years later!

Good place to eat. BBQ was good. Mac n Cheese, beans, and corn were delicious. Brisket, burnt ends and sausage were all legit. Service very friendly!!!!
Fantastic Rib dinner with fried and creamy coleslaw. Other order was burnt Rib ends with sweet coleslaw. Waitress was superb as was the food.
Sorry no pictures, forgot. These robs wer so tender, smokie and fall off the BBB one tender. Best. I would recommend the sweet and sour slaw it pairs well with the ribs and believe it or not the baked beans.
